While visiting my Grandmother’s house, I saw vintage $100 bill from 1928.

This $100 bill was printed 95 years ago — before the Great Depression, and at a time when America’s financial system was unrecognizable to its modern counterpart.

For fun, I wanted to share a few interesting facts about this vintage $100.

Facts that highlight the importance of investing, and showcase the dangers of failing to beat inflation.

It’s Not A $100 Bill, It’s A $100 Gold Certificate

THIS CERTIFICATE IS A LEGAL TENDER IN THE AMOUNT THEREOF IN PAYMENT OF ALL DEBTS AND DUES PUBLIC AND PRIVATE.

Unlike today’s money, this $100 note was redeemable for $100 worth of gold.

Precious metals backed the United States currency, and paper dollars were a convenient (and easily transportable) expression of that bullion.

How Much Would $100 Worth Of Gold Be Worth Today?

Taken to the gas station or Walmart, now, the $100 gold certificate buys $100 worth of candy or video games.
