This $100 bill was printed 95 years ago — before the Great Depression, and at a time when America’s financial system was unrecognizable to its modern counterpart.

THIS CERTIFICATE IS A LEGAL TENDER IN THE AMOUNT THEREOF IN PAYMENT OF ALL DEBTS AND DUES PUBLIC AND PRIVATE.
Unlike today’s money, this $100 note was redeemable for $100 worth of gold.
Precious metals backed the United States currency, and paper dollars were a convenient (and easily transportable) expression of that bullion.
