Video content is infinitely more popular than written material.

Getting 1,000 views on a blog post is an accomplishment.

Getting 10,000 views on a YouTube video is typical.

While video content has a larger audience, it’s also much harder to make.

“Shooting ratio” is an insider metric that measures the amount of footage created compared to what’s used in the final cut. For a big Hollywood production, you might have a shooting ratio of 10:1, or 900 minutes of footage is required to make a 90-minute movie.

With YouTube, you might have a lower shooting ratio. But depending on the niche, you can easily spend 3–6 minutes of effort on every 1 minute of published video.

In other words, a “simple” 10 or 12 minute video can eat-up a whole afternoon of effort.

While platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts require less effort, they have draconian monetization hurdles that exclude all but a handful of top creators.

To make money with YouTube Shorts, you need 10 million views in 90 days.

That’s great for popular catagories like gaming or silly comedy sketches. But it’s near-impossible for many niche topics to reach this milestone.
