Every day, millions of readers email me to ask “How can I invest in Uruguay.” So, in what is sure to be the Internet’s most widely read article of 2021, here’s the answer:
Big, mega-cap U.S. stocks.
Just this year, Pepsi announced a $64 million investment into their Uruguayan operations.
Huge consumer staple companies (like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, or Colgate) sell their products all over the world — including obscure and illiquid markets.
Okay, obviously no one has ever written in and asked how to invest in Uruguay.
However, there are a lot of international finance and travel websites that love hyping up out-of-the-way destinations as “The Ultimate ROI.” Why own boring Apple stock when you could personally buy a South American cattle ranch or invest in a private-equity Cambodian business deal?
The problem with these investments is that they’re often hard to get into (since many are highly illiquid or completely private), and there’s a lot of risk from cultural and political factors that are difficult to comprehend.
