Being old and boring, I love grocery shopping. In fact, finding weird supermarket products is one of my favorite hobbies. And while browsing the soda isle recently, I found a doozy: Guarana Jesus.

This is an obscure and regional Brazilian soda.

Guarana Jesus was created in 1920, by a Brazilian pharmacist named Jesus Norberto Gomes. The beverage is incredibly popular in the Brazilian state of Maranhao, but remains highly localized.

This isn’t a drink you’d see on store shelves throughout the country.

It’s an extremely regional product.

That said, while Guarana Jesus is localized, guarana itself is not. In fact, this is a very common ingredient in many Brazilian soft-drinks.

“Guarana” is a type of South American plant that, according to Wikipedia, “contains about twice the concentration of caffeine found in coffee beans.” There are a lot of different guarana sodas throughout Brazil, with AmBev making the most popular version.

Guarana Jesus, however, has two distinct features which set it apart from the competition.

The first is that it’s bright pink (as you can see in the picture below). And the second is that Guarana Jesus tastes like bubble gum. Sweet bubble gum too. This is a “candy-like” drink but it’s actually pretty…
