Poop. Bat poop.

For decades, this was the best fertilizer in the world — bar none.

Bat poop, more formally known as guano, was such an effective fertilizer that the United States passed the Guano Islands Act. A law that allows U.S. citizens to claim any uninhabited island as United States property — as long as the island contains some guano deposits.

Fun fact: the Guano Islands Act is still in effect to this day, with the latest island claim being made in 1997.

Why bring this up?

Because most natural fertilizer aren’t that effective. And the ones that are effective, like guano, are extremely limited. Especially when it comes to modern industrial agriculture on a global scale.

Synthetic fertilizers allow farmers to grow more crops on less land. Making food both cheaper and more plentiful.

There’s a fantastic book called The Alchemy of Air that’s all about the Haber–Bosch process for creating synthetic fertilizers. To keep this brief, modern synthetic fertilizers are what caused the 21st Century population boom. And they’re why we no longer have massive, global famines.
